Brand managers needed to compare more than two metrics at once to spot real trends. I redesigned Pattern’s graphing tool to support multi-metric visualizations, giving managers clearer insights and faster decision-making.

MY TEAM
- Mason Burk (Product Manager) - Me (Product Designer) - 4 frontend and backend developers
Through discovery interviews, I learned that brand managers often needed to track 3–5 metrics simultaneously to understand campaign performance and make optimization decisions. For example, comparing ROAS, spend, and organic sales together revealed insights that weren’t visible in a two-metric view. I explored multiple interaction patterns for adding and removing metrics, balancing flexibility with clarity. Key challenges included preventing visual clutter, ensuring graphs remained readable, and aligning with existing design system constraints. My role included: - User Research – uncovering real-world use cases for multi-metric analysis. - Interaction Design – designing flows for selecting, customizing, and toggling between metrics. - Data Visualization – simplifying how multiple lines could be displayed without overwhelming users. - Prototyping & Testing – validating usability with brand managers and refining designs to improve readability. - Cross-functional Collaboration – working with engineers to ensure performance and scalability when rendering multiple data streams.
The new multi-metric graph feature enabled brand managers to view and analyze 3+ metrics in a single visualization, eliminating the need to juggle multiple charts or external tools. Key results: - Provided a more holistic view of campaign performance, reducing the need for Excel exports. - Helped managers uncover correlations between metrics (e.g., ad spend vs. organic sales lift) that were previously hidden. - Improved decision-making speed by streamlining analysis into a single graph view. - Delivered a scalable graphing solution that fits seamlessly within Pattern’s reporting platform and design system. This project turned a restrictive two-metric graph into a flexible, insight-driven visualization tool—giving Pattern’s brand managers a more powerful way to make data-informed decisions at scale.
